What Do You Call Someone Who Films A Wedding?
This seems to be a pretty big question among brides who are just starting their wedding planning. I get called a photographer all the time - and it's not a huge deal, as long as we are on the same page that you want me to FILM your wedding.
Someone who films a wedding is called a "Wedding Videographer."
I know, it's kind of a strange word. Especially when autocorrect doesn't acknowledge it. But according to Wikipedia: "Strictly speaking, a videographer is a person who works in the field of videography and/or video production, recording moving images and sound on video tape, digital, or any future data storage medium..."
The difference between a photographer and videographer is easy - one captures photos, while the other captures video.
This is why when I get called a photographer, I will immediately correct you and make it extremely clear that I am a videographer. It's not that I'm a stickler for proper terminology - it's just that these two services are completely different things. I'd hate for you to hire me expecting to get photos and in turn you receive a video. Obviously that would never happen because of the process we take to get to know each other before the wedding, but still, why move forward with a videographer if you're looking for a photographer, and vice versa?
To be fair, there are several companies now that offer to capture both photos and video of your wedding day - but as of now, I'm not one of them, and there are many out there just like me who won't do photography.
Believe it or not, just because you are a great photographer doesn't mean you'll be a great videographer, and if you're a great videographer it doesn't mean you'll be a great photographer. While the two often go hand-in-hand, they involved completely different processes - different cameras & equipment, different memory cards, different battery life, different lighting, different shooting methods and most importantly, different editing methods & programs.
So, just to avoid any confusion and mishap on your big day - remember when you're talking about someone who is going to film your wedding that they will be called your videographer.
I hope this helps!
